FH Stories | Working Together (SEK)

Helping at least 200 people to become more employable is the extraordinary mission of Folkestone’s Working Together project.

The scheme, which runs until 2022, helps people feel more prepared to find work by enhancing their employability skills – or signposting them to the support they need.

Working Together project is part of the Folkestone Community Works programme managed by Folkestone & Hythe District Council with local organisation SEK (Social Enterprise Kent) responsible for delivery. Part funded by the EU’s European Structural and Investment Fund, it focuses on those wards within the Folkestone Community Led Local Development area (CLLD).

“One of our participants is 25 and has been out of work for some time, with really low self-esteem. She didn’t have a proper CV and had no idea of what she wanted to do,” says Matt Saxena, Operational Supervisor for the project.

“Since being referred to us, we have helped to bring her out of her shell, giving her back confidence to pursue what she wanted to do and changing her life for the better.

“She has now started a counselling course, along with volunteer work for a local charity. It is this kind of result that shows the difference projects like this can make, it all about investment in the community.

“Getting someone into work is not only fantastic for their wellbeing, it also contributes to the health of the local economy,” adds Roy.

“The same is true of the businesses we support through the sister project Enterprising Opportunities, creating jobs that in turn feed into the vibrancy of Folkestone town centre, improving the lives of people who live and work there; and building success that everyone can share in.”
