FH Stories | Julia Jones

No sooner was child number two born than Julia Jones and her husband Bob were planning their next move.

“We were in a small two-up two-down in East London,” she explains, “and we either wanted to buy in a London suburb even further from the centre, or to take the leap and find a seaside location where my husband could commute to London.

“We looked at the usual places – Margate, Brighton – before we came to Folkestone. It was the fastest commute and has lots going on. Rent was cheaper and when we come to buy, we will get much more for our money.”

The family moved to Seabrook a year ago. And so far, coastal living seems pretty idyllic.

“We live as close to the beach as possible, we go after school and whenever it is remotely nice. I enjoy the shingle beach; you don’t have to deal with sand!

“We cycle to Folkestone Harbour Arm, and we love Dungeness and the light railway. Greatstone beach is majestic.”

Of course, it’s not all days out by the sea. The right job also slotted into place for Julia, a highly experienced marketeer; she now manages internal digital communications projects at an international reinsurance company Swiss Re Group’s Folkestone office.

“There are good quality local jobs here if you know where to look. I cycle along the coast to work, which for me is amazing. My husband can split his time between London and home, and he’s still able to do the school drop offs in the morning.”

For the amateur seamstress, ‘werkin’ mama’ and seaside dweller, becoming part of the community also proved to be a breeze.

“There is a big ‘DFL’ community in Folkestone that is very easy to become part of, which really helped me settle in.

“And we can afford a guest room now, so we have lots of visitors!”
