Discover Hythe Venetian Fete

A Spectacular Floating Carnival on Kent’s Royal Military Canal

Few summer events capture the imagination quite like the Hythe Venetian Fete. Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Royal Military Canal in the heart of Hythe, this much-loved community celebration has been delighting visitors and residents alike for well over a century.

First established in 1890, the Venetian Fete has grown into one of Kent’s most unique and cherished traditions. Every two years, the historic canal is transformed into a vibrant open-air theatre as a flotilla of beautifully decorated floats glides along the water in a spectacular floating carnival. Created by local organisations, businesses, charities and community groups, each float showcases extraordinary creativity, craftsmanship and community spirit.

The highlight of the event is the Grand Parade, which takes place twice in one unforgettable evening. Visitors can enjoy the colourful daylight procession before returning after dusk to witness the same floats illuminated in a dazzling display of lights reflected across the canal waters. The transformation from day to night creates a truly magical atmosphere that draws thousands of spectators from across Kent and beyond.

More than just a parade, the Hythe Venetian Fete is a celebration of local pride and togetherness. Organised by a dedicated team of volunteers and supported by local businesses and community groups, the event brings people together through live entertainment, music, family activities and a shared love of one of Hythe’s most treasured traditions.

Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to relive fond memories, the Hythe Venetian Fete offers a magical summer experience and a chance to witness one of Britain’s most distinctive floating celebrations.

Grab a spot on the banks of the canal – bring your own chairs, picnics and rugs and set up camp for a wonderfully unique evening. Alternatively, feast from the street food vendors stationed along the canal paths serving a whole range of local products, treats and dishes.

FUN FACTS

Did you know… The centre stage on Hythe Royal Military Canal was built to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. It was handed over to the Hythe Venetian Fete Society to maintain and is on land leased by Folkestone and Hythe District Council.

Did you know… The floats are made from wooden platforms carried on old aircraft auxiliary oil tanks. They are checked and repaired before every Fete to make sure they are fit for competitors who then build their tableaux on top of them in the few days before the Fete

Did you know… The Fete went ahead on 30 August 1939, three days before World War 2 broke out. Although a number of entries cancelled and there were fewer traders and holiday makers because of the unrest, it was described in Committee minutes at the time as a ‘triumph of organisation and optimism over difficulty’. Hythe Mayor, Sir Arthur Self, said: “We are just going to show Herr Hitler and a few other people that Hythe does not care in the least about the situation, but will carry on with business and pleasure as usual.”
