Step into the Story: What is the Book Festival?

From 13 to 23 of November 2025, Folkestone comes alive with the magic of stories, ideas, and creativity at the Folkestone Book Festival. For ten days, the seaside town hosts world-famous authors, rising voices, and thinkers from all walks of life. Whether you’re into gripping thrillers, memoirs, poetry, or bold conversations, there’s something for every curious mind. It’s not just about reading, it’s about experiencing literature in a town that turns every street into a stage.

The festival opens in style on Thursday 13 November with Joanne Harris, bestselling author of Chocolat, and closes on Sunday 23 November with the legendary Irvine Welsh, author of Trainspotting. In between, audiences can explore talks, workshops, performances, and events that celebrate stories of all kinds.

Where the Magic Happens: Festival Locations

The heart of the festival is the Quarterhouse, Folkestone’s award-winning arts venue in the vibrant Creative Quarter. With its striking architecture, flexible performance spaces, café, and exhibition areas, the Quarterhouse sets the scene for headline talks and readings.

But the festival isn’t confined to one venue. Events spill out into churches, galleries, intimate corners, and other surprising spaces across Folkestone, turning the whole town into a living library. Visitors can enjoy seaside walks, explore the buzzing harbour, or pop into independent shops and cafés between events. Every corner feels alive with stories waiting to be discovered.

The 2025 programme features an exciting mix of established names and emerging talent. Big names include Lisa Jewell, Rupert Everett, Amanda Knox, Jung Chang and Kate Mosse, alongside fresh voices bringing energy, new perspectives, and thought-provoking conversations.

Community is at the core of the festival. The festival is designed for everyone—from long-time book lovers to curious first-timers—making it as much about community and creativity as it is about headline authors.

Curated for the second year by Sophie Haydock, the festival combines imagination, accessibility, and ambition. Visitors can explore lively debates, interactive workshops, and events that celebrate the power of stories to connect us all.
